are there fireflies in washington state
We stay around the same time every year, so what I witnessed this year made me very happy. Beautiful! The area is mostly a dry oak woods with plenty of pines, birch, ironwood and aspen mixed in. Someone told that fireflies arent native to the west side of the Rockies, but thats not really true, since California also has some fireflies, but much less than in the east. We may---in the end--have had less value here than the fireflies. It rained the night of June 24 and the morning of June 25, and I found many slugs and snails in the yard on the 25th. She says they're only out for a couple weeks, so pack everyone up for a magical summer night! Even out front of the house around the sidewalk and street. Not as prevalent as in the East though. Those few species that have been discovered in Southern California have been found mostly by ponds, springs, seeps and streams. Theories abound as to why why American firefly populations have been in decline in recent decades; mosquito sprays, ravenous fire ants, and light pollution are three possibilities as to why nights . What causes that? As a kid growing up in Washington DC, I remember looking for fireflies at dusk.
